Makins Clay Extruder

The Makins clay gun extruder has many uses. With the 20 disc designs you can create many different embellishments for your projects. The round discs are for vines, stems, borders, and letters. The screen discs are for hair, grass, straw and floral stamens.The flat slot discs are for weaving baskets, lattice, ribbons and bows. The square, triangle, half round discs are for bricks, logs, borders, and can be cut and used for small beads.

The Makin’s Ultimate Clay Extruder has a wonderful little O ring that cleans the sides of the barrel as you extrude the clay. There is next to no residue left behind on the barrel and because both ends have screw caps, you can easily run a paper towel through it to remove any clay that might be left behind.

Around the push disk at the end of the threaded rod, you might need to clean off a tiny amount of clay, but it is extremely easy to remove. This extruder is nothing like the other ones on the market. It holds more clay and is longer and slightly larger in diameter, plus it has 20 disks instead of 19. There is also another two sets of 10 different discs available.

Artistone Modelling Stone

Inside the box is a plastic bag full of  powder, that when mixed with water forms a moldable material – not unlike sandy  dough.

It’s a little hard on your hands, but being able to sculpt or mold an object that looks and feels like stone is fabulous.

If you keep your unfinished artwork moist you can continue to work on your creation almost indefinately. Once dry and aged Artistone is permanent and weather proof.

Original Sculpey
As the name suggests this is the original clay. It comes in white and Terra Cotta colours. Preferred by sculptors and in classrooms for art projects. I like to use it as a medium to embed mosaic in. The Terra Cotta has the feel of actual Terra Cotta to me – all without the kiln baking of course!

Super Sculpey

The popularity of the Original Sculpey led to the formulation of the more durable Super Sculpey, which is beige-pink in color. It’s a favorite with the doll-makers and the movie studios. I like the more porcelain look of this clay.

There is also a slighly firmer version, called Super Sculpey Firm (of course).

Sculpey III

Now we are talking colours - there are 40 colors of Sculpey III and you can mix them together to create heaps more. This clay was designed as the “children’s modeling clay” – well, we are all children at heart right? I know many, many clay artists that use this clay, especially for sculpting small figures. Sculpey III is a soft clay, easy to knead and to use. I especially like the matte finish it yields.

Premo! Sculpey

This is the clay artists’ dream come true! Literally, this clay is the product of the artists input about what we wanted, needed, wished for a perfect polymer clay. It’s easy to use, requires very little kneading, bakes to a very durable finish, and it comes in 32 colours, including several metallic and pearlescent colours and translucent. These colors are INTENSE, so you can reduce those canes to little tiny proportions and maintain your vibrancy of colour. The colours are also based on the Grumbacher colour line – if you know how to mix paint, you can mix the clay just the same way. The sculptors love it since it holds their tiny lines so well, the millifiori artists love it because it moves and canes so well, the stampers love it because it doesn’t “slump” their designs when it bakes. The colours hold true after baking, the tensile strength is wonderful.

Sculpey Super Flex Bake and Bend

Those Sculpey Wizards in the laboratory just keep giving us more and more clays to use. This product remains extremely pliable and flexible after baking. It comes in 8 colours, which can also be mixed to create custom colors. As with all Polymer clay products, you can even mix it with other Sculpey or polymer clay products to add flexibility to your work.

Sculpey Glow in the Dark

This is similar to Sculpey III with one major difference – it glows in the dark in 4 different colours. I like to make monster eyes with this product – they continue to glow after the lights go out!

Sculpey Granitex

This special clay has the appearance of stone when baked. The fibers contained in the clay create a speckled granite effect that is a real favorite with the stamping artists. It comes in 8 colours and you can even create custom colours by mixing in small amounts of Sculpey III or Premo! Sculpey. I know the figurine artists like to use the blue Granitex to simulate denim. I like to mix a little translucent into it to create a quartz-type effect.

Translucent Liquid Sculpey

Often referred to as TLS, is another dream product from Sculpey. The arrival of TLS to polymer clay is similar to the arrival of the paperclip in the office – how did we get along without it? Imagine a pourable polymer clay that bakes to a translucency that can rival glass when sanded and buffed. This product can be used as a “glueing agent” for clay to clay and clay to porous surfaces, such as wood or terra cotta. Once baked, it’s more durable than glue. It also can be used for creating transfers, paper marbling techniques, enameling – the list goes on and on – and will continue to grow. You can even add your own mediums to the TLS to tint it, such as oil paints, powdered pastels, mica powders, embossing powders. It’s a must have on your clay work table for it’s adhesive properties alone.

Amazing Eraser Clay

The name says it all!! You can sculpt, stamp, cane, and texture this clay. Bake it for 10 minutes at 250 degrees and you have a terrific eraser to match your outfit, your notebook, your favorite TV character, or sculpt that cute kid 2 rows up. Amazing Eraser Clay comes in 8 yummy tropical colours.

Hearty Japanese Air Dry Clay

Well, I make no secret of the fact that Hearty is my favourite Air Dry Clay.

It’s a Japanese Paper Clay and, unlike other paper clays I have tried, it doesn’t have that soggy feel. In fact it’s so soft and silky that it’s a pleasure to create with.

Being a paper clay it is extremely light, making it great for making flowers, and objects that need to fine and delicate.I often use Hearty for making my miniature japanese figures, it has a soft silky feel when dry, it’s firm but has a a little flexability – again, ideal for flowers, figurines, jewellery or almost anything where you don’t want the hard stone feeling of polymer clays.

Hearty can be coloured prior to modelling by mixing in a little acrylic paint, or by using one of the Hearty tinted clays. Of course after Hearty dries you can embellish with the usual array of paints, PearlEx glitters, Rub N Buf, lacquers etc.

If I had to give up all my clays and choose one, it would be Hearty for sure.
